The team was managed by José Pekerman. Argentina had a strong squad with a mix of experienced players and up-and-coming stars, including Lionel Messi who was only 18 years old at the time. Despite being one of the pre-tournament favorites, Argentina suffered a quarter-final exit at the hands of hosts Germany, losing on penalties. Maxi Rodríguez scored one of the goals of the tournament with an incredible volley in the round of 16 against Mexico.
